On the Semi-analytical Estimation of Laser Noise Influence on Direct Detection Transmission System Performance

A new semi-analytical approach to estimate the influence of directly modulated semiconductor laser noise on direct detection system performance is proposed and its accuracy is analysed utilizing rigorous mixed semi-analytical simulation. It is shown that this new semi-analytical approach gives a more precise upper bound than the one obtained by other approach currently used, and differences of about 3dB can be observed between the sensitivity estimates provided by the two approaches.
